PROGRAM SUMMARY

Heritage College’s 23-week International Pharmacy Graduate Bridging Program is designed to help internationally educated pharmacists meet Canadian entry-to-practice requirements. It covers the unique features of the Canadian healthcare system, from jurisprudence to  drug schedules and standards of practice. The program includes hands-on experience with mock OSCE and MCQ exams to prepare students for their provincial certification. The program is delivered through a blend of lectures, workshops, practicums and self-directed studies.

Successful completion of this course will ready a graduate student to complete the Alberta College of Pharmacists’ qualification exams, specifically the  PEBC Qualifying Exams Part I (MCQ) and Part II (OSCE), and the ACP’s Jurisprudence and Ethics exam. Graduates will also obtain assistance in reaching the ACP’s  Structured Practical Training requirements. Once a graduate becomes a registered pharmacist with the ACP, they can join the Alberta healthcare community in hospitals, retail pharmacies, clinics and laboratories.

Applicants to the International Pharmacy Graduate bridging program must meet the following prerequisites:

Structured Practical Training Requirements

International Pharmacy Graduate bridging programs students complete this program with 450 hours of internship experience at one of our partner retail pharmacies. Successful completion of this internship will satisfy Phase I of the ACP’s internship requirements. To participate in the internship, students must satisfy the following prerequisites:

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

This course covers the requirements of obtaining a license to practice as a pharmacist in Canada, the Canadian healthcare system, clinical pharmacy practice and Canadian pharmacy management strategies.

In this course, students will obtain hands-on experience with the OSCE scheme for each type of station, and learn how to search for references in your test.

This course refreshes’ a pharmacist’s medical knowledge, specifically covering:

  • – Cardiovascular disorders, including dyslipidemia, hypertension, heart failure, stroke and acute coronary syndrome
  • – Endocrine and metabolic disorders, including diabetes mellitus and thyroid disorders
  • – Women’s health and contraception
  • – Central nervous system disorders, including ADHD, depression, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy and dementia
  • – Gastrointestinal disorders, including GERD and inflammatory bowel diseases
  • – Chronic kidney disease and dose adjustment

  • – Respiratory disorders, including asthma, COPD and allergic rhinitis}

  • – Infectious Diseases

  • – Musculoskeletal disorders, including osteoporosis, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis

  • – Neurological disorders, including migraines, pain management, dependency and addiction

  • – Minor ailments and vaccinations

This course involves familiarization with the scope of the pharmacist practice in Alberta, including drug schedules and the standards of practice of the Alberta College of Pharmacists. It also refreshes’ a pharmacists’ knowledge of essential pharmaceutical calculations.

This course preparing students to enter and engage with the Canadian market. It covers building resumes for the Canadian job market, developing interview skills and job search strategies.

Students will receive hands-on training and individualized evaluation to prepare themselves for the PEBC’s MCQ and OSCE exams.
